Authors – Alfred Lord Tennyson

Once again the literary Gods intervened.

I was in hot pursuit of James Carpenter in a Jan 13, 1887 newspaper but stumbled upon this item:

Alfred Tennyson News

I know Alfred Lord Tennyson not from reading his books but from the card game Authors that we played when we were kids back in the 50’s.

The card game was easy and fun to play. Through it I learn the names and faces of: Louisa May Alcott, James Fennimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Sir Walter Scott, William Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Mark Twain.

My three favorites to say were James Fennimore Cooper, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Something about saying those long names was appealing to me when I was ten years old.

Seeing Alfred Tennyson in the 1887 newspaper and reading the item about the still living author made me think back to the nights the five of us kids would sit around the blanket covered, dining room table and say “Do you have Alfred Lord Tennyson?”

Thank You.

P.S.
I went to search for the card game, so that I could put the faces on this blog and ended up ordering the card game. Now my grand children will be able to play a game I loved.
